On Friday evening I was a proud High School Principal as we bid farewell to our Class of 2017 at their graduation ceremony. It was a wonderful event and would not have been possible without Ms. Mala, our University Advisor who spent many hours organising the whole evening. It was also a sad time as we said goodbye to the students who will venture to new pastures and new challenges whether at University, National Service, a gap year or into business. We wish them all the very best and look forward to hearing their news as they take their place in the world.
Approaches to Learning
On Friday our Grade 9 students were introduced to the Personal Project through a day of workshops. They completed a range of individual and group activities that focused on each IB MYP AtL strand: critical thinking, creative thinking, communication and presentation skills, organisation and time management, reflective skills, information and media literacy. The day began with students completing a survey to identify their character strengths and they then used these strengths as they completed each workshop. We had a number of students coming away from the day saying they had 'great fun and really enjoyed the range of activities'.
Pre-IBDP at ISS
Our grade 10 students have now completed their eAssessments and will be back in school on Thursday to begin a two week introductory unit in the IBDP subjects they have selected for grade 11. The purpose is that over the two weeks students will be provided with:
- a detailed, subject-specific overview of the courses that they will take in Grade 11 & 12, including learning expectations in terms of prior knowledge, learning skills, subject-specific content, homework and independent study.
- an introduction to subject-specific command terms and terminology through relevant examples.
- a detailed list of tasks (which may include reading subject-related articles, books, accessing websites, watching TED talks etc.) that will provide them with a ‘grounding’ in that particular course.
We are confident that this provides our students with a foundation that will support their transition into our DP programme, ensuring they are informed and familiar with the subjects they have chosen to pursue. Information will be sent to students and parents via ManageBac about our Pre-IBDP programme. If you have any questions, please contact Mr Jungo, our IB coordinator, [email protected]
We say good bye to some of our High School teachers this year. I am sure you would like to join me in wishing them all the very best and a heartfelt thank you for what they have achieved at ISS.
