This coming week all students in the High School will be involved in exams. Our Grade 9 and 11 students begin a week of internal assessments and our Grade 10 and 12 students will finish their external exams on Friday 19th. Examinations are one of many methods that are used to gather data and provide students with information to help them assess their own performance, and gain a better understanding of their strengths and weaknesses. They also provide critical data for our teachers to use to enhance their teaching and learning practice to better meet all our students needs.
Our Grade 10 students will complete three days of World of Work from the 22nd - 24th May. This is a new initiative that has been introduced at ISS through our University advisor. It aims to provide students with opportunities to gain experience in work placements, to gain an insight to their own strengths, and start to explore possible work options for later in life. Thank you to all of the parents and organisations that have made this possible by accepting students into their workplace. If you would like any further information about our World of Work, please contact our University advisor, Mala on [email protected]
This week I once again attended a meeting with fellow teachers and administrators at the Positive International Educators (PIE) network. The group meets once a month and discuss student and teacher well-being, review latest research, along with sharing strategies that we can use at our schools to support students and teachers. I wanted to share with the High School community about the work we have been doing to provide a caring and nurturing environment for all. We have been focusing this school year on building strengths and developing creative and positive thinking that will boost happiness, well-being and achievement for our students.
High schoolers experience mindfulness (or silent time) throughout the day in lessons, prior to examinations or assessments, before whole school assemblies and at the end of the day. They have a 'check in' every semester with the school counsellor and are members of small homeroom (Kampong) groups, where they meet everyday to share and discuss current happenings. We are also reviewing our Pastoral programme to include Martin Seilgman's (the founder of positive psychology) 24 'character strengths'. These strengths include creative thinking, kindness, fairness, leadership, forgiveness, and teamwork. Character strengths are already embedded into the IB Learner Profile and Approachers to Learning. Many of our school activities teach students how to develop these strengths and skills in order to initiate positive change in their lives.
