Our student winners and their nomination profiles:
Masaki, from Japan, and Andy, from Indonesia, became friends while studying at ISS International School Singapore. In Andy’s hometown of Jakarta, they experienced the realities of the city’s street children through the NGO Sahabat Anak, which provides shelter and education for the city’s more than 400,000 homeless youth. For Masaki, it was his first time witnessing true poverty and seeing how small actions make a difference, and when he and Andy returned to Singapore they made a commitment to support the organization in whatever ways they could. By volunteering at the Center, publishing a book about its work, and speaking on the issue of street youth to audiences in Singapore, Masaki and Andy model the very best of international collaboration and acting to make a difference.
Surabhi has been raising funds and awareness for the victims of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy since 2013. On her first visit she interacted with the children in classes or on the playground. She took photos and videos of the people of Bhopal and made an awareness video. She organised an Art Workshop and taught 100 children to make hand puppets using paper plates. In Singapore she organised an awareness campaign and a fundraiser to collect $3200 through sales of 200 handmade key rings and 140 T-shirts. This fund was used to purchase a van. She made 2 more visits to Chingari to spend time with the children and distribute supplies. Recently, she collaborated with drama students and a playwright to organise a drama night entitled 'Project Chingari’ to portray the problems of the underprivileged.
